Things to do in August: Bicentennial events that are fun and celebrate everything Singaporean

We know that tickets to the ever-so-popular The Bicentennial Experience have been fully booked for the month of August, but that won’t stop us from getting into the patriotic spirit of National Day because there are many other events happening across the island that will put you in the mood put Home on repeat.

We’ve curated a list of events that celebrate what it means to be Singaporean, so don some red and white, and head down with your family and friends.

1. SNCF Bicentennial Pop-Art Event

This pop-art event, entitled “Coming Together As One Through Art”, utilises art as a medium to express the greater social impact of a united people with a common goal. As you walk through the showcase, you will be prompted to ponder over the issues that people have faced in the past, yet are still relevant in today’s social climate.

2. Brick Art Peranakan Showcase

Legos are not just a thing of our childhood – these tiny bricks can also be put together to form 2D and 3D artworks and figurines, such as of vintage cars, in this exhibition. Co-created by the residents of Tanglin, students, and Brick Art IG members, these Lego panels will aptly highlight one of the core cultures in Singapore, the Peranakan culture.

3. ND 200 Photo Exhibition: From Singapore to Singaporeans – Pioneers and Descendants

A picture speaks a thousand words, so what about the hundred pictures in the ND 200 Photo Exhibition? This photo exhibition aims to compare and contrast the portraits of modern-day Singaporeans and pioneers who came to Singapore during the maritime era to showcase the stories of our immigrant forefathers and the sacrifices that they have made to get us to where we are today.

4. Orchid Extravaganza – ‘Our SingaPop’ Edition Floral Display

This year’s Orchid Extravaganza display puts our uniquely Singaporean identity in the spotlight by placing a pop art twist on familiar icons such as the Dragon Playground, HDB blocks, and even the Ice Kachang. Blooming orchids (15,000 in total!) complemented by the vibrant colours of the displays make for great photo opportunities, so remember to practise your poses and bring along a fully-charged camera!

5. Singapasar 2019

Support local enterprises this National Day at this year’s iteration of Singapasar, which features stalls carefully curated by The Farm Store. Familiar brands such as Eden + Elie, Epigram Books, and Tanuki Raw will be making an appearance at the fair to complete your eating, drinking, and shopping experience.

6. I AM CITIZEN Signature Art Market

If you (sadly) didn’t manage to get tickets to this year’s National Day Parade, spend your day at The Local People’s I AM CITIZEN Signature Art Market instead! Besides browsing local art installations and making crafts with the people behind IKI Makers Union, you can stay till the sun goes down to catch the fireworks and party the night away.

7. SSO National Day Concert

What are the things that you associate most with National Day in the month of August? Flying flags, red and white, and… national day songs of course! This year, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra has partnered with the Singapore Symphony Chorus to bring you a night of both old and new homegrown melodies.

8. Stories to Celebrate!

This Bicentennial, revisit stories from the past through this interactive storytelling tour around Esplanade. Discover myths and folktales from various parts of Asia, including the Malay Archipelago, and race against time to uncover all the stories that our forefathers brought with them to the island of Singapura.
