3. Merdeka – a production by W!LD RICE

Source

Written by award-winner Alfian Sa’at and up-and-coming playwright Neo Hai Bin, this new play confronts us with questions about our colonial past – and its ripple effects. The premise: As Singapore’s Bicentennial is celebrated, six young locals form a group called Raffles Must Fall. They go over forgotten texts, artifacts, and re-enact scenes from the past.

Why celebrate the beginning of colonialism rather than its end? Has Singapore gained independence without truly undergoing a process of decolonisation? And if Raffles must fall, what will he take down with him? – These are the questions the production aims to provoke.

Where: The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre @ W!LD RICE, Funan Level 4, 107 North Bridge Road S(179105)

1. Halloween Horror Nights 9

Back for its 9th rendition of the ultimately terrifying Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Studio Singapore is not for the faint-hearted. The 2019 edition features five haunted houses – one created by the filmmakers that brought you Thai horror blockbusters Shutter and 4bia. It transports you from the vibrant Bangkok streets to a dingy village under a spell cast by Naga, a snake spirit. If you hate houses with tonnes of obstacles, blood, and gore, then avoid the Curse of the Naga house.

The other houses include haunted chalets, Southeast Asian horrors, killer crowns, creepy dolls and more. After experiencing the houses plus the two scare zones and two nightmarish shows, you’ll even have experienced a morbid metal procession, performed by fictitious band Death Trap – with specially designed floats and electrifying (plus probably terrifying) acts all complete with pyrotechnics.

Where: Universal Studios Singapore, Resorts World Sentosa, 8 Sentosa Gateway, S(098269)
