Apparel retailer UNIQLO announces a collaboration with Marimekko to launch the UNIQLO x Marimekko Limited Edition Capsule Collection. The collection will be released on 21 May.
Most of us are familiar with Marimekko, a Finnish design company that is known for its brightly coloured prints and simple styles, seen on home furnishings and women’s apparel.
The theme for this latest collaboration is Joyful Summer, which takes inspiration from Nordic midsummer traditions, as well as the sun’s warmth during that time of the year.
Commenting on the new collection, Yuki Katsuta, Head of Research & Development at UNIQLO Co., Ltd., says, “We are delighted to collaborate with Marimekko once again and particularly pleased to feature, for the first time, patterns that Japan’s Fujiwo Ishimoto designed for Marimekko. His prints, which combine Scandinavian design with Japanese elements, are bold yet delicate, and unique.”
Some of Marimekko’s most iconic designers contributed to this collection. The collection showcases seven bright prints from four designers in Marimekko’s archive, including Fujiwo Ishimoto’s exquisite floral designs and Annika Rimala’s lively stripes.
If we were to pick out a highlight, it has to be work from Fujiwo Ishimoto, who created 400 patterns for Marimekko from 1974 to 2006.
The collection features three prints designed by him that embody Finnish nature, including designs that showcase the Finnish midsummer custom of picking flowers inspired his Seitsemän kukkaa (seven flowers) design, the exuberant Talkoot (work party) floral design, and the Pikkulempi (little love) pattern, representing flowers in a meadow.

The UNIQLO x Marimekko Limited Edition Capsule Collection will launch on 21 May.
