For those who miss the Samsung Galaxy Note (the last Galaxy Note device was launched in 2020) for its productive functions, the new Samsung S22 Ultra may sound like good news.
Samsung announces on Wednesday (9 February) the Galaxy S22 series, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra as its highest-end model in the line-up, and is touted as “Samsung’s most powerful S series phone yet”.
This new device is the first Galaxy S that comes with the S-Pen stylus. This is stylishly housed in a slot at the bottom of the device.
The South Korean tech giant says that this S-Pen features improved functionality: 70% lower latency, without compromising on battery capacity.
When AVENUE ONE tested the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s S-Pen at the media preview, we found that it was indeed precise and smooth-to-use. The lag between the writing and appearance of the text on the screen was also almost negligible.
If you’re intending to do a lot of note-taking or document-signing on your phone, you’re definitely going to appreciate the inclusion of this improved S-Pen in the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Featuring a 6.8-inch screen, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra also promises better camera that works under any lighting condition, making it perfect for “nightography” (night photography). This applies to both front and back camera.
Built with a 2.4um pixel sensor – the largest pixel sensor by Samsung currently – its camera lenses captures more light and data to improve the lighting and detail of your photos and videos.
You can look forward to smoother and clearer nighttime videos without flare, thanks to the S22 Ultra’s advanced Super Clear Glass lens. It also comes with a pair of zoom lenses that cover up to 10x optical zoom.
AVENUE ONE tested the camera under low light and found that it was easy to take crisp photos with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, especially if you’re not using any zoom.
We also noticed that it was able to create a great bokeh effect that makes images look more dramatic.
Photography enthusiasts will be happy to know that the Galaxy S22 Ultra (along with S22 and S22+) is compatible with the Expert RAW app that allows you to access in-camera editing tools that are similar to that of a DSLR experience.
You’ll be able to save your photos in RAW format, adjust the ISO settings, shutter speed, white balance, and do manual focus, in order to gain more control over your photography experience.
In terms of battery, Galaxy S22 Ultra supports 45W super-fast charging and promises more than a full day of use with a single full charge.
The Galaxy S22 and S22+ are the other two devices that were unveiled along with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The key differences between them and the Galaxy S22 Ultra is in the strength of the cameras, as well as the absence of the S-Pen in the lower-end options.
If you ask us, we think that the Galaxy S22 and S22+ are already pretty powerful devices that can satisfy most casual users. However, go for the Galaxy S22 Ultra if you use your phone frequently for business – so a good stylus can help you be more productive – or if you do a lot of photography, especially under low light.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will be available in four colours: Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green, and Burgundy.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ 5G will be available in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green, and Pink Gold.
Pre-order for all S22 series devices will commence from 9 February at 11pm and will be available in Singapore from 4 March 2022. It will be available at at local telecommunication operators (M1, Singtel and StarHub), major consumer electronics & IT stores, selected authorised mobile retailers, Samsung Online Store, Samsung Experience Stores, and Samsung Official Store in Lazada and Shopee.
