Put on your platform boots and dust off your disco pants because the smash-hit musical, “Mamma Mia!,” is back in Singapore and running until November 5th.

Previously gracing our shores in 2014 and 2018, “Mamma Mia!” remains one of Singapore’s perennial favorites, evident from the enthusiastic response of the opening night audience. AVENUE ONE was there as part of a media invitation.

For those uninitiated in the world of Judy Craymer’s “Mamma Mia!”, this global phenomenon weaves a delightful tale about a mother, Donna, and her daughter, Sophie, who hatch a plan to discover Sophie’s biological father among three potential candidates at her wedding on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi.

This heartwarming story was adapted into the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008, featuring A-listers Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, and Pierce Brosnan.

The musical’s narrative unfolds through 22 of ABBA’s greatest hits, including classics like “Dancing Queen,” “Take A Chance On Me,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and, of course, its namesake, “Mamma Mia.”

The energy in the theater was electric from the moment the curtains rose. At least one enthusiastic audience member was already on her feet, ready to groove to the sounds of ABBA.

Honey, Honey

It’s no surprise why – ABBA’s music has an irresistible toe-tapping rhythm, and most of us in the audience couldn’t resist bobbing our heads as Sophie and her friends kicked off the musical with “Honey, Honey,” recounting her mother’s love life before she was conceived.

Every single song was a delight, even those less familiar. The integration of these songs into the musical felt seamless, giving the beloved tunes a fresh dimension and vibe.

Sara Poyzer, in the lead role of Donna Sheridan, delivered an exceptional performance, both in acting and singing. One of the standout moments was when she sang an emotional and heartwarming “Slipping Through My Fingers,” reflecting on her relationship with Sophie, who was about to walk down the aisle. This sentimental number nearly brought tears to my eyes.

In an instant, she transitioned to a scene where she met Sam Carmichael, one of the potential fathers whom she still loved. Poyzer’s rendition of “The Winner Takes It All” was heartbreaking, powerful, and passionate, sending shivers down my spine.

Sarah Earnshaw, playing one of Donna’s friends and a rich, flirtatious three-time divorcee, also shone in her performance of “Does Your Mother Know,” fending off Donna’s staff member Pepper, who made advances despite the age gap. This flamboyant number was a joy to watch, and the chemistry between Earnshaw and Jaden Oshenye (Pepper) electrified the scene.

Beyond the stellar performances, the stage composition was a visual treat. Highlights included “Lay All Your Love On Me,” featuring a seamless transition and set chawnge from an all-men vocal, set, and scene to an all-women one. “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” was another impressive performance, a hen party scene that used lighting and choreography to create a bustling atmosphere while ensuring that the characters speaking stood out.
