With many of us spending most of our hours indoors in our homes, it makes sense to keep the space spick and span. But when 60% of household dust comes from outside through the windows, doors, vents, and even the soles of your shoes, keeping your home clean may be easier said than done.
Dust doesn’t just come from outside, it also originates within the home too. There’s likely to be more skin that’s going to be shed when more people live under the same roof and the more pets you have, the more animal fur you’ll find.
But creating a healthier, cleaner home may just be a tad easier, as Dyson has unveiled a brand new generation of cord-free vacuum cleaners with the Dyson V12 Detect Slim. Engineered to detect hidden dust as small as 10 microns and equipped with an acoustic piezo sensor to enable scientific proof of what’s been sucked up, the all-new cordless vacuum cleaner sets out to redefine deep cleaning at home.

Three key technologies in Dyson’s new V12 Detect Slim
Laser dust detection technology
Fully integrated into a Fluffy cleaner head is a precisely-angled green laser that’s a first in Dyson to help make you feel reassured that your home has been deep-cleaned. This laser technology reveals dust particles that you cannot normally see, so you’ll barely miss a thing to clean.
The idea came about when a Dyson engineer noticed that airborne particles in their home glistened in the sun. They began to research how they could take this notion and apply it to the fine dust we cannot see in our homes. The team experimented with laser lights in the lab to test how this could be achieved until they found a specific green laser diode.
Chosen for its ability to provide the best contrast, it is fitted into the Slim Fluffy cleaner head, positioned precisely at a 1.5-degree angle, 7.3mm off the ground to reveal – and remove – hidden dust on the floor surface that is otherwise invisible to the naked eye.
And as a pet owner of two cats, I cannot stress enough how amazed – and thankful – I am for this technology.
Amazed, because for the first time, I could finally see all the invisible dust that’s been living in my home rent-free. Thankful, because I am now able to get rid of them effectively thanks to this new gizmo.
To be honest with you, I’ve never looked at other vacuum cleaners ever since I bought myself a Dyson vacuum cleaner with my hard-earned paycheck back in 2017 (is it adulting when you are more excited about shopping for household products than clothes?).
Prior to reviewing the V12 Detect Slim, I’ve been using Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute which I personally felt gets the job done really well all the time.
With the new laser technology outfitted on the V12 Detect Slim, however, my current machine fell short as it doesn’t have the ability to reveal hidden dust in my home like the V12 Detect Slim can.
Just take a look and see all the invisible slivers of dust – most likely pet fur, if I have to hazard a guess – that are roaming on the floors!
If you stay with a handful of family members or have a pet – or two – of your own, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is a must-have.
Acoustic dust sensing technology
Understanding that people want more hygienic homes now more than ever, Dyson engineers set about developing a technology that enables the user to measure the dust it detects and then displays it on an LCD screen in real-time.
So, how does this work? Well, it’s all part of the day’s job of an acoustic piezo sensor that has been integrated into the vacuum. Carbon fibre filaments in the cleaner head pick up microscopic particles which are sized and counted up to 15,000 times a second.
The dust enters the vacuum and hits the acoustic piezo sensor within the bin inlet with the tiny vibrations being converted to electrical signals.
The dust size and quantity are shown on the in-built LCD screen, so you can see how much dust the vacuum has removed, as well as the different sizes of particles and deliver scientific, real-time proof of a deep clean.
The vacuum cleaner has also been designed so that it automatically increases suction power when they come across a large amount of dust.
This happens in auto mode when the piezo sensor detects high concentrations of dust, and reactive suction power is triggered to automatically increase in power. When dust levels normalise, suction power is reduced to its previous level.
When set in auto mode, the piezo sensor will also automatically adjusts its suction power across different floor types to provide further reassurance that you have deep-cleaned your home.
While Dyson’s vacuum cleaners have been always been great at sucking up hair on the floors, many have also sent feedback to the brand that removing trapped hair on the vacuum brush bar can be a hassle.
This is a common challenge for many vacuums too, and to counter it, Dyson engineers have come up with a new anti-tangle hair screw tool.
The anti-tangle conical brush bar spirals hair off and into the bin, which prevents the wrapping of hair around the brush bar.
Designed with human and pet hair in mind, the Dyson engineers delicately tweaked the precise angle of the bristles on the tool, to make sure that the release force did not tangle the hair and tested the tool on multiple hair types to ensure its efficacy.
Comparing the anti-tangle conical brush tool to any other Dyson accessories I have for the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute, I have to say that it’s a game-changer for me – and arguably for the industry – as I can easily clean up any hair on the floor now and I don’t have to worry about any of the long strands getting stuck on the brush bar at all.
What else to expect from the Dyson V12 Detect Slim
In addition to the three super technologies, the V12 Detect Slim also features Dyson’s 5-stage advanced filtration technologies, capturing 99.99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, to expel cleaner air.
The Dyson cyclone technology is efficient at separating dust and dirt from floors and surfaces too, and whole machine sealing means this isn’t leaked back into your homes.
You can also count on the Dyson Hyperdymium motor that generates up to 150 air watts of powerful suction, the motor-driven cleaner head, and an ergonomic aluminium wand for powerful yet comfortable cleaning everywhere, including tight corners and hard-to-reach areas.
At 2.2kg, it’s not the lightest vacuum cleaner in the Dyson family – there’s the Micro 1.5kg that weighs just that – but it’s still lighter than the other bigger-capacity vacuum cleaners out there.
Of course, being of the Slim family, I noticed that the Dyson V12 Detect Slim has a relatively smaller bin size compared to my own Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute. But with a medium bin size, I was still able to go for at least three to four cleans before needing to empty the bin.
The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is equipped with an advanced seven-cell battery that delivers up to 60 minutes of run time, and has a single-button power control that you just need to press one for comfortable, continuous cleaning.
Last but certainly not least, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim comes with click-in battery, which you can remove and replace at the press of a button if you have a spare battery pack – and to charge on or off the machine.
It goes without saying that your home will never be dust-free but with the new Dyson V12 Detect Slim, you can definitely suck up those dust bunnies to keep your home as clean as it possibly can – even if said dust bunnies are invisible to the naked eye.
