Most home-owners have visited IKEA at some point of their life because it is the go-to destination for furniture and other furnishing needs. While the retailer stocks candles (both scented and unscented), you would hardly associate the candles you get from IKEA as “luxurious”.
All that will change when the brand releases OSYNLIG today (21 January), a candle collection that was created with Ben Gorham, the founder of luxury fragrance and fashion house Byredo.
Called OSYNLIG (Swedish for “invisible), OSYNLIG is designed to heighten the experience of being at home and evokes emotions that are hard to put into words, such as a scent that reminds you of nostalgia for the things you’ve done or something reminiscent of dreams of the things you might.
Other than Ben Gorham, IKEA also partnered students from the Royal College of Art to explore the potential of invisible design, based on the idea that it’s not just what your home looks like that affects how it makes you feel. And this exercise also influenced the final products in the OSYNLIG collection.
The design of the candle pots are understated and practical, and carries a triangle-shaped marking on them – a reference to the three notes in a fragrance: top notes, middle notes, and base notes.
The collection is divided into three categories: fresh (seven scents), floral (six scents), and woody (six scents) so that you can find the scents that suit you and your home.
The IKEA x Ben Gorham OSYNLIG collection will be available at IKEA from 21 January. Prices range from S$9.90 to S$39.90.
