A Golden Ticket to Childhood Wonder: We Review Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical in Singapore

There are certain childhood stories that never really leave you, and for me, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has always been one of them. So walking into the Sands Theatre to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical felt a little like stepping directly into the pages of a book I grew up loving.

What surprised me most was how much more surreal the experience felt in live theatre form. I had thoroughly enjoyed the film adaptations over the years, but there is something undeniably magical about watching Willy Wonka’s world unfold right before your eyes — the sets transforming in seconds, the theatrical illusions, the larger-than-life musical numbers, and the collective gasp of the audience whenever another fantastical moment appeared on stage. Live theatre has a way of making imagination feel tangible, and this production leans fully into that sense of wonder.

The musical stays faithful to the heart of Roald Dahl’s beloved story, while cleverly refreshing certain elements to make them feel more current and relatable for modern audiences. The updates never feel forced; instead, they give the story a sharper contemporary edge while preserving its timeless themes about greed, kindness, excess, and innocence. Even the humour lands differently in a theatre setting — cheekier, more self-aware, and often surprisingly witty for adults in the audience.

Musically, the production strikes a satisfying balance between nostalgia and spectacle. Familiar songs from the classic film are woven together with newer musical numbers, creating a show that feels both comforting and fresh. The staging itself is wonderfully extravagant, with enough visual surprises to constantly keep your eyes searching the stage for the next detail.

I also appreciated that the Singapore production attempts to sprinkle in a touch of local flavour — a small but thoughtful detail that drew some especially enthusiastic reactions from the audience. I won’t spoil it here, but it is one of those moments that makes the experience feel a little more special for local theatre-goers.

Adding another layer of excitement to the experience is Wonka’s Surprise Golden Ticket Campaign, an audience engagement activation created exclusively for the Singapore season.

Throughout the run, more than 8,000 Golden Tickets will be hidden beneath selected seats at the Sands Theatre, turning every performance into a treasure hunt of sorts. Much like the story itself, there is an element of anticipation and wonder in not knowing whether you might uncover a surprise beneath your seat before the curtains close.

Rewards range from dining and retail treats to beauty experiences, luxury hospitality perks, and limited-edition collectibles, making the theatrical experience feel even more immersive and delightfully unpredictable.

More than anything, the show captures the feeling of childlike wonder — that rare sense of believing, even briefly, that impossible things might actually exist somewhere behind a pair of factory gates. For longtime fans of the book, it feels like revisiting a treasured childhood memory in the most immersive way possible. And for younger audiences discovering the story for the first time, it is easy to imagine this becoming one of those formative theatre experiences they will remember for years.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical is running at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands, from now till 14 June 2026. Tickets are priced from S$88 and are available on the MBS website.
