Newly opened Moroccan tapas and cocktail bar promises authentic food steeped in tradition

There are few dining establishments in Singapore that offer Moroccan cuisine, and even fewer Moroccan cocktail bars. That’s why the newly opened Tajine is the perfect place to visit with friends or loved ones who are always looking for somewhere enthralling to dine.

Led by Executive Chef Remy Carmignani, who has spent time in Morocco and gained profound knowledge of the country’s culinary tradition, Tajine beautifully combines the rich culinary heritage and lifestyle of Morocco with a contemporary twist. The authentic Moroccan tapas and cocktail bar is sure to impress.

Tajine Interior_Overview

The moment I stepped into Tajine, I felt like I was whisked away to a scene from Arabian Nights. The space features an inviting ambiance enhanced by soft, warm lighting and arabesque walls.

But that’s just the beginning of your Moroccan experience.

Prepare to embark on a tantalising journey of flavours as Tajine showcases the exquisite and authentic tastes of Moroccan cuisine. The menu features meticulously crafted handmade and slow-cooked dishes influenced by the Mediterranean and Africa. Each dish at Tajine embodies Moroccan hospitality and culture, where revelry, indulgence, and sharing take center stage in the dining experience.

Mixed Platter of Moroccan Salad Selections

I recommend starting the meal with the Mixed Platter of Moroccan Salad Selections (from S$36 for a choice of three), an ideal starter for sharing.

This delightful platter features three or six vegetable options, including highlights such as Zaalouk, grilled eggplant seasoned with paprika and parsley; Khizou Mchermel, a cooked carrot salad with chermoula and preserved lemons; and Bessara, a creamy and light fava bean hummus drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. I particularly enjoyed the Zaalouk and highly recommend it.

Tajine Pastilla- Chicken
Pastilla

Another great dish for sharing is the Pastilla (from S$58). This traditional savory pastry pie is made with layers of thin filo, stuffed with slow-cooked meats, spices, dried fruits, and nuts—similar to Western pies but with a flakier crust. What makes it unique is the light dusting of powdered sugar, giving it a touch of sweetness that cuts through the savory and rich flavors.

The highlight of the meal will certainly be the Couscous Royal (S$48 per person), a dish you must try when you visit Tajine.

This dish pays homage to the cherished Moroccan tradition of “Friday couscous,” where friends and family gather over a generous and heartwarming meal.

Couscous Royal features fluffy hand-rolled semolina cooked with lamb merguez, lamb chop, spring chicken, kefta, onion tfaya, and chickpeas, complemented by a silky lamb and chicken bone broth that perfectly enhances the ingredients. This hearty dish is a feast for the eyes and the palate.

Of course, you can’t visit Tajine without ordering a Tajine. This staple item in Moroccan cuisine is named after the intricate cone-shaped clay pot in which the meat or fish is slow-cooked.

I tried the Wild Atlantic Monkfish Tajine (S$88), a modern take on the traditional dish, and it was splendid. I loved how the spices came together, infusing the fish with flavor in every bite. The portion size was also very generous, so make sure you save room in your stomach for it.

Tajine Cornes de Gazelle

Finish the meal with a traditional dessert. If you’re looking for something unique, go for the Cornes De Gazelles (S$16, five pieces), delicate crescent-shaped hand-made cookies adorned with a dusting of powdered sugar.

A true insider knows to pair Moroccan food with the Traditional Moroccan Sweet Tea (S$12), which features fresh mint and a generous amount of sugar. Alternatively, you can explore the cocktail menu or opt for a Moroccan shot if you prefer a beverage with a stronger kick.

Tajine is located at 18 Mohamed Sultan Road, Singapore 238967. It’s open from 12pm to 3pm and 5pm to 11pm on weekdays and 11am to 3pm and 5pm to 10pm on weekends. It is closed on Mondays. Make a reservation here.
