Merci Marcel opens in Orchard and unveils a new menu. Here are our favourite dishes

After its outlets in Tiong Bahru and Club Street, multi-concept lifestyle brand Merci Marcel opens its third establishment in Palais Renaissance, a mall in Orchard Road.

The new outlet is inspired by “France in The Tropics”, and features exquisite design elements such as vintage pieces sourced from France and floor tiles handcrafted by Italian artisans. The opening of the beautifully furnished new outlet also comes with the unveiling of a new menu conceptualised by French consultant Chef Nicolas Nguyen Van Hai and a concept store that carries over 700 lifestyle products from 80 unique brands.

Merci Marcel Orchard: What should you order?

We tried the Ravioles de Royans, Palais (SGD22), a dish that’s designed for the new outlet and is a re-interpreted rendition of the Ravioles de Royans (French dumpling pasta filled with cheese) that’s signature to Merci Marcel. The new version adds a frothy foie gras emulsion to the dish and is served with chunks of foie gras.

Having also tried the original Ravioles de Royans before, we have to say that the re-interpreted version is even more indulgent and is now our new favourite.

We also ordered the Impossible Marcel Burger (SGD29) to check out how Merci Marcel prepares the plant-based patty. Served with tomato chutney, fried goat’s cheese, and aged parmesan, the burger was juicy and hearty, and absolutely delicious. The goat’s cheese adds to a slightly gamey taste to the burger so you may just forget that it’s a vegetarian dish for a moment.

For desserts, we had the Creme Brulee (SGD10), a new dessert item for the Merci Marcel Orchard outlet. This dish is made with Werther’s Original candies (whipped and cooked with milk, cream, and eggs) and finished with homemade salted caramel. We love that it’s served in a big and shallow bowl so you get more of the burnt sugar, which makes the comforting dessert less cloying. We couldn’t stop digging into it even though we were already very full.

For something more refreshing, try the Pineapple Carpaccio (SGD11). Made up of thinly sliced pineapples, the dessert is dribbled with a house made sauce comprising of natural organic honey, lime juice, and olive oil, and finished with mango puree sprinkled with coconuts flakes and coconut biscuit.

Other dishes to consider include

  • The Perigourdine Salad (SGD24), which features a delightful mix of crisp mesclun, flavourful boneless duck confit, buttery foie gras, fresh potatoes, chestnuts, and a splash of special truffle oil to heighten the flavours
  • Tarte Flambée (SGD26), thin crust pizza with generous servings of reblochon cheese and slices of smoked duck breast
  • Atlantic Wild Cod (SGD34), if you prefer something heartier. This fish is paired with two unique homemade sauces – creamy beurre blanc sauce made from white wine, shallots, cream and butter, and herb infused sauce composed of spirulina and vinaigrette. The dish is served with risotto and a splash of chopped white, purple and orange carrots.

If you enjoy cheese, you should also check out their cheese platters that are made up of daily selections. Speak to the waiters for recommendations based on your own palate.

The beverage menu at Merci Marcel Orchard is extensive, and 80% of the options are organic or made from sustainable agriculture. Try the cocktail menu that includes tipples such as the La vie en Marcel, made with Fair gin, lime cordial, egg white, pear nectar, lime juice, and pear liquor and the Little Narcos Dictator, concocted with Dictator rum, bitter chocolate, and cinnamon. You’ll also be able to find craft organic beer selections from Maddam, and a range of organic sustainable wines.
