A baking studio and cafe that features home-based bakers is now open – learn all about it

Many of our local businesses suffered economically the past few years, and because of this, many people started trending the hashtag ‘SupportLocal’ in hopes that they could encourage more people to patronise local stores.

Well, if you’re looking to continue this movement of supporting local, it’s now much easier thanks to a new concept brought about by Far East Organisation.

Open-kitchen concept + cafe

Baker X is a baking studio and cafe at Orchard Central set up by Far East Organisation that allows home-based bakers the chance to have a pop-up store where they can market their bakes and try their hands at running their own bakery.

The aim is to support these home-based bakers who have the intention of scaling up into full-fledged outlets.

Baker X has an open-concept kitchen and it comes equipped with the latest baking appliances from brands like the leading Swiss household name, V-Zug, so home-based bakers do not have to bring any special equipment from home. In fact, these home bakers do not have to pay a single cent for the space at all.

Pay a visit and you’ll be able to catch these home-based bakers in action! You’ll even get to taste their pastries in the 10-seater cafe or order them for takeaway so that you can enjoy them at home.

Enjoy a cuppa while having pastries

And of course, when you’re having pastries, it’s always great to have them with an aromatic cup of coffee or tea.

As such, these home bakers will be working alongside Foreword Coffee Roasters, a social enterprise that provides inclusive work environment for persons with disabilities, special needs, and mental health conditions, to provide customers the option of beverages.

The menu is extensive and you’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding what to get. We’d recommend trying their signature brews which include the Timeless Yuan Yang (S$6.50) and the Filter Coffee (S$6 for hot, S$7 for iced).

The Timeless Yuan Yang features a double ristretto shot with an earl grey iced ball topped with milk. When the beverage is served, you’ll get a stronger hint of coffee. After the earl grey iced ball starts to melt, that’s when you get notes of earl grey.

New line-up of bakers every few weeks

Each baker will have two to six weeks to operate before they pass the baton on to the next baker. Currently, Baker X will be working with a curated line-up of bakers till the end of the year.

From now to 30 January 2022, the featured baker will be Browned Butter Bakehouse. The highlights of this bakery include Browned Butter Cinnamon Rolls (S$4), LUXE Tart (S$5.80) which features flavours like toffee, caramel, and nuts, Passionfruit Meringue Tart (S$5.50), and the White Choc and Raspberry Popsicle (S$4.50) where creamy white chocolate and vanilla bean whipped ganache are encased in a crisp tempered chocolate coating.

These bakes are not only delicious, but they are also very visually appealing, making them perfect for the ‘gram.

After Browned Butter Bakehouse, the next featured home-based baker is Mon Cerise Patisserie and it will operate from 8 to 20 February 2022.

Mon Cerise Patisserie uses a selection of the finest French ingredients while following healthier and lighter recipes, so every pastry put out will be a ‘guilt-free indulgence’. Try out the Les Petites Tarts (S$4.50 each, S$22.50 for a box of five) which come in flavours such as Lemon and Basil, Chocolate, Chestnut Mandarin.
