With the ongoing restrictions in place, we definitely won’t be having the usual family reunion to celebrate this year’s Dragon Boat Festival as we used to in the past.
To keep everyone safe, food fairs are not likely to operate as well so you can definitely stop dreaming about a bak zhang sampling session.
But, that doesn’t mean we can get in the spirit of the festival with food! Ahead, we’ve gathered our top brands that are dishing out bak zhangs for takeaway and delivery so you can enjoy the Dragon Boat Festival with your loved ones comfortably and safely at home. Happy shopping!
1. Toast Box
We all know and love the traditional bak zhang that is steamed, but fried? That’s definitely a first for us.
Introducing Toast Box’s new seasonal speciality – the Teo Chew Double Delight Bak Zhang (S$6.80). If you’re a fan of foods that fall between sweet and savoury, then you are going to love this as it’s packed with flavourful ingredients that satisfy both tastebuds such as shiitake mushroom, chestnut, and homemade sweet tau sar, then topped with a thick layer of sweet and spicy dark sauce. Pickled cucumbers are also served on the side to help neutralise the rich taste of the bak zhang, if you need.
Additionally, you can add on S$1, to savour your bak zhang with a comforting cuppa coffee.
The Toast Box Fried Teo Chew Double Delight Bak Chang can be purchased for takeaway from all Toast Box outlets islandwide. Alternatively, you can get it via delivery platforms such as GrabFood, Foodpanda, and Deliveroo.
2. Mr Bean
We are all well-acquainted with Mr Bean’s signature soya bean and mini pancakes, but did you know the brand makes its own bak zhangs too?
Available in three different flavours – Nonya Dumpling, Mushroom & Chestnut Rice Dumpling, and Brown Rice Dumpling, Mr Bean’s bak zhangs may be made with quality meatless ingredients but they still pack a punch in terms of flavour to satisfy both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.
Available for purchase in bundles of four, eight, and 12, you have the option to mix and match your preferred bak zhang flavours on Mr Bean’s website. Additionally, get a free limited-edition Mr Bean cooler bag when you purchase a bundle of 12 via delivery from now till 12 June.
3. Hai Tien Lo
Back by popular demand, Hai Tien Lo’s bak zhangs are jam-packed with the best ingredients that the restaurant could source, so you know you’ll be in for a treat when you dig into these dumplings.
Inspired by well-loved comfort dishes, the restaurant’s Executive Chef, Ben Zeng, and Dim Sum Chef, Ho Kam Fai, have come up with new bak zhang interpretations for this year’s Dragon Boat Festival.
Here are the three delectable flavours to expect:
- Traditional Jumbo Rice Dumpling with Abalone (S$38.80): Filled generously with succulent pork belly, salted egg yolk, chestnuts, green beans, lotus seeds, and – wait for it – a whole abalone to complete the flavour profile. Share it over dinner with the family or if you love bak zhang as much as we do, you’ll probably do fine savouring it on your own.
- Classic Taiwanese Dumpling with Sesame Oil Chicken (S$18.80): Inspired by Taiwanese flavours, this is filled with a combination of chicken leg, fungus, Chinese rice wine, and sesame oil.
- Teochew Dumpling with Yam Paste and Gingko Nuts (S$10.80): Drawing inspiration from the local yam dessert (orh nee), this will certainly be a unique bak zhang to dig into.
Additionally, look forward to exquisite bak zhang bundles – the Classic Bundle Set (S$68) and the Premium Bundle Set (S$98) – that Hai Tien Lo put together for this special occasion.
With both, you’ll get six different bak zhangs and your choice of either a bottle of Hai Tien Lo’s signature homemade XO Chilli Sauce or Sweet and Sour Spicy Bean paste Sauce, which will all be wrapped up in beautiful packaging – perfect for gifting!
