You probably already know Michelin-star restaurant Alma, helmed by Chef Haikal Johari. The chef had recently opened alkove, a French-inspired bistro in the heartlands of Kovan, putting aside the fine-dining culinary style we know of him, and going for homely French cuisine in his new venture.
I have visited Alma a few times and enjoyed my experiences there. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I visited alkove, and was surprised that it gives off an absolutely different vibe – it felt a lot cosier, more cheery, and very un-intimidating.
alkove stands out at the end of a long stretch of shops, thanks to the bright splashes of yellow, blue, and terracotta that accented the space. I stepped into the bistro and instantly felt like I was brought to another world – perhaps a cafe in a quiet town in France.
I visited at night, but I can see how the large alcove windows are going to be a huge highlight in the morning when sunlight stream in. The decor within is also tasteful and welcoming.
alkove: food review
My dining companion and I went for filling options on the menu for dinner: the Chicken Vin Blanc (S$27.90) and Chicken Cordon Bleu (S$22.90).
Between the two, we really enjoyed the Chicken Vin Blanc, which features a free range chicken leg, served with terragon, maitake mushroom, and a super smooth egg pasta.
The hearty dish was the perfect comfort food as the flavourful and moreish sauce make every bite pleasant.
You should definitely go with an empty stomach if you’re intending to get this dish; it’s really sizeable.
Besides these, highlights in the menu you can look forward to include the French Onion Gratinée (S$12.90) from the Entree section and the Confit de Canard (or Duck Confit, S$22.90) from the Mains section.
The former is based off the classic recipe of French Onion Soup but elevated with a touch of miso for an additional kick of umami.
And if you’re looking for other hearty options to indulge in, consider the Ocean Trout (S$26.90) served with ratatouille, pistou, and smoked tomato butter, and the Wagyu Onglet Steak Frites (S$29.90), which features Margaret River Wagyu, watercress, and beef jus.
For desserts, we tried the Creme Caramel (S$9.90), which was delightful. It’s decadent with its creamy texture yet not cloying, thanks to the addition of berries to lift its flavours.
We also tried the Matcha Yuzu cake (S$5.70/slice), which was delectable. This was served with clotted cream and azuki bean paste, which added dimension to it.
Besides these, you can look forward to a variety of Gateaux and Mignardise (bite-sized desserts). These sweet French favourites are baked fresh daily so you can expect the best taste from them.
If you’re visiting during breakfast or brunch, certainly check out its bakery section. I tried the Croissants and Kouign-Amann and they were fragrant and crisp. The croissants, especially, were puffy, flaky and buttery. In fact, even if you were to visit at lunch or dinner, remember to take some of these baked items away for tea or breakfast the next day.
Besides the food, alkove also doesn’t take its drinks menu lightly. The coffee menu was created in collaboration with CATA coffee while the teas have been curated by ETTE Tea, offering a selection of hot tea, cold brew, and tea mocktails.
